eBay peak season 2026: what eBay's research says, and what to do before Black Friday

Author: Prolisto Team · Published: · 12 min read

Calendar for November 2026 with Black Friday on Friday 27 November and Cyber Monday on Monday 30 November marked, and the days before them set aside for price floors and Black Friday plans

eBay peak season runs from the first Christmas shopping in the autumn to the January sales, and buyers start earlier than most sellers plan for. eBay's 2026 Seller Peak Playbook found that more than half of UK Christmas shoppers will have started buying before Black Friday, and many before October. eBay's advice is to have your listings in shape before October. If you're reading this at the end of October, that date has gone.

The season hasn't. Black Friday falls on Friday 27 November this year, and across our clients, Black Friday week brings 27% more orders than a normal week on average. This guide picks out the numbers from eBay's research that matter to a selling business, says plainly what they don't prove, and turns them into a plan by date: what still pays off in the next four weeks, what to leave for next year, and why January is a month for buying stock as much as selling it.

What did eBay's 2026 peak research find?

UK shoppers plan to spend at least as much as last Christmas, they care most about value for money, and younger buyers put a large share of their budget into Black Friday. The research was carried out for eBay by Censuswide, with 2,001 UK adults who celebrate Christmas, between 15 and 19 June 2026 (eBay's peak resources page).

TopicWhat eBay's research found
Spending74% plan to spend the same as last Christmas or more. 42% of Gen Z plan to spend more, against 13% of Gen X and Boomers.
BudgetsAverage planned Christmas budgets run from £590 (Boomers) to £711 (Millennials).
Black Friday48% plan to buy Christmas presents in the Black Friday sales, and 73% of Gen Z. Gen Z expect to spend 37% of their Christmas budget there on average.
Black Friday categoriesFashion (43%), consumer electronics (35%), and beauty and grooming (34%).
What matters in a presentValue for money (76%), then quality (62%).
Refurbished tech1 in 3 shoppers would buy refurbished electronics as a present, with £168 as the average planned spend.
Video and live selling43% say video influences what they buy on marketplaces (56% of Gen Z). 22% have watched or bought through a live stream (42% of Gen Z).
After Christmas33% will look for post-Christmas sales online, 28% expect to return at least one present bought online, and 21% plan to spend gift money or vouchers online in the days after Christmas.

What the numbers don't tell you

Survey figures give you a direction, not a sales forecast. Keep four things in mind before you plan around them.

  • They're intentions. A survey in June measures what people expect to do in November, and budgets change by then.
  • The ad and eBay Live figures are eBay's own data. eBay reports that sellers using a Promoted Listings priority strategy saw over 90% more clicks and over 50% more sales than on items they didn't promote (January to March 2026). Promoted and unpromoted items aren't the same listings, so not all of that gap is down to the ad. It shows ads can work. It doesn't tell you what they'll return on your margins.
  • The eBay Live figure counts the sellers who kept going. eBay says 93% of marketplace sellers who use eBay Live grow their sales, but the playbook's notes say this is based on sellers who streamed at least four times a month for six months. eBay adds that results aren't guaranteed.
  • Your buyers aren't the average buyer. The survey covers UK adults who celebrate Christmas. If you sell car parts or used textbooks, your own sales from last November tell you more than Gen Z's Black Friday budget does.

Now to mid-November: fix the listings buyers are shortlisting

Spend the next two weeks on listings, not ads. Early shoppers compare and shortlist, and paid visibility only helps a listing that's already worth clicking. eBay's own advice puts listings before advertising too.

Work through them in this order:

  1. Last year's peak best sellers. Your own sales history beats any survey. Check what sold in November and December 2025, and make sure it's in stock and listed now.
  2. Your gift categories. If you sell fashion, electronics, or beauty products, these are where Black Friday buyers say they'll spend.
  3. Titles and item specifics. Put the words buyers search for at the front of the title, and fill in every required and recommended item specific, because buyers filter search results by them. Our guide to eBay SEO covers both.
  4. Photos. A clear main photo on a plain background and, for used stock, a photo of every flaw you mention.
  5. Prices. Check them against sold prices, not asking prices. Value for money tops buyers' lists, so an item priced well above its recent sales is easy to skip.
  6. Returns and condition. Make both easy to find in the listing. eBay's research suggests a clear returns policy helps you sell before Christmas, not only after it.

If you have hundreds of listings to get through, run a few of your best sellers through our free eBay listing grader to see where they fall short of competing listings, then fix the same gaps across the rest.

What to leave for next year

Some jobs pay off over months, not weeks. In November they take time away from the work above:

  • Redesigning your eBay shop or listing templates.
  • Launching a new product line for Christmas. New stock has to arrive, be listed, and build a sales history, and four weeks is tight for all three.
  • Shooting video for your whole range. If you already have video for your best sellers, add it; plan the rest for the spring.

Black Friday to Cyber Monday: 27 to 30 November

Black Friday is where a large share of Christmas money goes: 48% of shoppers plan to buy presents in the Black Friday sales, rising to 73% of Gen Z. Across our clients, Black Friday week brings 27% more orders than a normal week on average. Set these up before the week starts.

Set a price floor for every item first. Decide the lowest price each item can sell for after fees and postage, before you plan a single discount. A sale price, a coupon, and a Promoted Listings fee each look small on their own, and together they can add up to a loss. Our eBay profit calculator works it out per item.

Put a coupon in every parcel from now on. eBay's coded coupons can be printed as a note for each parcel from the Orders tab in Seller Hub, shared as a link on social media, or sent to groups of past buyers. A buyer who opens a November parcel and finds a code for Black Friday week has a reason to come back when they're ready to spend. Give the coupon an expiry date and a minimum spend to protect your margin.

Send offers to watchers. Someone watching your item has already shortlisted it. Black Friday week, when they're ready to buy, is the time to send them an offer, and never below your floor.

Reward bigger baskets. Order discounts, such as 10% off three or more items, suit buyers shopping for several presents at once. Our guide to increasing eBay order value shows how to set them up.

Decide how you'll judge Promoted Listings. eBay UK offers two strategies (Promoted Listings overview). With the general strategy you pay an ad fee only when a promoted item sells. With the priority strategy you pay per click, and get priority access to ad placements and controls such as keyword targeting. In eBay's research, 40% of shoppers say sponsored products matter when they buy on a marketplace (59% of Gen Z). Which strategy suits you depends on your margins and how much competition your items face. Whichever you use, set your rates before the week starts, not on the day, and judge them item by item on profit after the ad fee, not on clicks.

Watch stock across channels. A Black Friday sale on eBay can sell the last unit you also have listed on Amazon or your website. If your stock counts don't update between channels straight away, keep a small buffer on your fastest sellers for the weekend.

Selling refurbished or used tech? Make trust easy to see

eBay's research suggests that buyers of refurbished tech hold back for lack of confidence, not because of the price. 1 in 3 shoppers would buy refurbished electronics as a Christmas present, and 52% of Gen Z are open to refurbished in some form. The signals they look for most are a warranty (41%), seller ratings (26%), and a returns policy (25%).

Put those where buyers see them:

  • State the warranty near the top of the description: how long it lasts and who honours it.
  • Describe the condition in plain words, and photograph the marks and scuffs you mention.
  • Keep returns simple, and say so in the listing. If you can accept returns into January on items bought as presents, say that too.
  • Use the right item condition. eBay phased out the "Seller Refurbished" condition in selected categories in August 2025, and sellers outside its Refurbished programme now list those items as Used (eBay's announcement). Approved programme sellers use the programme's refurbished grades instead.

Seller ratings take months to build and one bad December to dent, which is why dispatch matters so much later in the season.

Is eBay Live worth trying this peak?

For most sellers, try it in November or January, not December. Live selling needs a regular schedule and someone on camera, and December is when you need every pair of hands at the packing bench.

The case for trying is real. In eBay's research, 22% of UK adults have watched or bought through a live stream (42% of Gen Z), and half know about live shopping but haven't tried it yet. eBay's case study of BDG Zone, a UK sneaker and apparel reseller, reports that its sales grew 131% year on year, with 74% of them made through eBay Live, and that it gained over 7,200 new followers. Its director, Marcin Kurowski, said:

"The live format helps us connect directly with customers, build trust within the community, and create an exciting shopping experience that keeps buyers coming back."

Live works best for items buyers want to see up close and in someone's hands: trainers, trading cards, collectables, and vintage clothing. It also needs a slot you can keep every week; remember that eBay's 93% figure counts sellers who streamed at least four times a month. Our eBay Live UK seller guide covers how to prepare stock and listings before your first stream.

December: dispatch on time and make returns easy

December is about getting parcels out, not finding new buyers. Your seller ratings depend on it. Work out a real cut-off date for each postage service, so you never promise a Christmas delivery you can't make. Our guide to Christmas posting dates has this year's carrier dates and the sum to use. Royal Mail 48's last recommended posting date, for example, is Friday 18 December.

Then plan for returns. In eBay's research, 28% of shoppers expect to return at least one present bought online. A returns policy that buyers can understand in a few seconds wins sales before Christmas and saves arguments after it. Prepared replies help when the requests arrive in January: see our eBay message templates for sellers.

January: quiet for selling, strong for buying stock

eBay's research points to a second wave of demand after Christmas: 33% of shoppers will look for post-Christmas sales online, and 21% plan to spend gift money or vouchers online in the days after Christmas. eBay also expects competition to ease in January, as many sellers slow down.

Our clients see it differently. January sales are usually not strong for them. What they do notice is the stock: used goods bought through charities are significantly better value in January, because people donate the things their new Christmas presents replaced, along with presents they didn't want.

So use January for both:

  • Keep listings live and relist anything that didn't sell. Buyers with gift money and vouchers are still shopping.
  • Clear stale stock to make room on the shelves for better stock. Our guide to getting rid of dead stock on eBay covers clearance pricing.
  • Check returned presents, regrade them if needed, and get them back on sale quickly. Here's how to relist an item on eBay after a return.
  • If you buy through charities, ask when their post-Christmas donations will be sorted, keep some of December's takings back to pay for stock, and check each item against recent sold prices before you buy.
  • Look back at peak before you plan the next promotion. Work out what Black Friday and December made after fees, ad costs, postage, and refunds, not just what they sold.

How Prolisto helps at peak

Prolisto is the one app at the heart of a selling business: listing, pricing, stock, dispatch, and buyer messages for eBay, Amazon, and more. At peak it helps you to:

  • Send offers to watchers automatically, at the times you schedule, with your discount and a price floor below which no offer is ever sent. Automatic eBay offers.
  • Run Promoted Listings in bulk, with an ad rate for each listing set from the stock you have, how fast the item sells, its price, and its competition. Dynamic Promoted Listings rates.
  • Keep prices competitive without going under your floor. The repricer checks competitors' active and sold prices on eBay and Amazon and adjusts yours within the limits you set. Automated pricing.
  • Build every eBay title from a template you set once, combining the product title, category, and the item specifics buyers filter by. Title constructor.
  • Stop buying stock that doesn't sell. A blocklist built from your own sales data flags poor sellers at the scan, which helps when January's donations arrive. Low-value item blocklist.
  • Print the whole day's labels in one batch, with courier rules picking the service for each parcel. Multi-carrier order fulfilment.

If peak is when your listing, pricing, and dispatch start to creak, book a demo and we'll show you Prolisto with stock like yours.

When does peak season start on eBay?
Earlier than most sellers plan for. eBay's 2026 research found that more than half of UK Christmas shoppers will have started before Black Friday, and many before October. Peak then runs through Christmas into the January sales.
Are Promoted Listings worth it at Christmas?
It depends on your margins and your items. With the general strategy you pay an ad fee only when a promoted item sells; with the priority strategy you pay per click. Test on a few listings before Black Friday and judge the result by profit after the ad fee, not by clicks.
What sells best on eBay on Black Friday?
In eBay's 2026 research, the categories shoppers plan to buy most in the Black Friday sales are fashion (43%), consumer electronics (35%), and beauty and grooming (34%). Your own sales from last November are a better guide for your shop.
Is January a good month to sell on eBay?
eBay's research says 33% of shoppers will look for post-Christmas sales online and 21% plan to spend gift money or vouchers online. Our clients usually find January sales quiet, but it's a good month to buy used stock, especially through charities.
